And it won’t be our last for sure.ĭarkness all around, only broken by billions of little dots of light. This is the biggest rodeo of my career to date and it’s an honor to be selected for it.This is not our first flight into the great unknown. “It’s something I’ve been preparing pretty much nine years of my life for. “This is a huge weekend for me,” he said. And that’s why the 37th annual Montana Pro Rodeo Circuit Finals will be a cherished memory. Now, Whitmoyer, 31, loves to make people laugh. “He made those guys better because he played so hard,” Van Diest said. Van Diest said Whitmoyer’s buddies in the locker room cared for him. I was always impressed with how tough he was.” “When the time came he laid it all out there. “Dave had some very big games for us,” Van Diest said. One of his best friends is Casey FitzSimmons, the former Carroll great who played several seasons in the NFL with the Detroit Lions before returning to the Saints for a short stint as an assistant coach. “Some phenomenal guys who probably could have played at the next level,” Whitmoyer said. ![]() Whitmoyer played with great Carroll athletes like quarterback Tyler Emmert and receivers Zach Bumgarner and Tyler Peterson. “And what I really remember about him is he was a great teammate.” “He was a great receiver for us, with great body control and great hands,” said highly successful Carroll head coach Mike Van Diest. Whitmoyer played for Carroll College from 2005-07, helping the Saints win a pair of national championships. I’ve got some Circuit Events, some PBRs, a little bit of everything.” I’m not going to have to leave the state of Montana in August. “But I’m committed to staying closer to home. “Rodeo takes you all over, but you’ve got to go where the jobs are,” he said. Whitmoyer hopes to work mainly rodeos in the Northwest in the near future. We’ve gotten to travel and see come cool parts of the country, thanks to rodeo.” ![]() But I really think she enjoys traveling me. “It’s how she met me,” Whitmoyer grinned. Newly married to Kelly, the couple lives near Stevensville in the Bitterroot Valley.Īnd what does Kelly think of her husband being a clown? It looks like I’m going to be busy with rodeos 10 of the 12 months of the year,” he said. He’s starting his third year with the PRCA, but this is the first time he was eligible to be chosen to work the Circuit Finals. “I like to see everyone out there having fun at my expense.” “That’s one thing I get a lot of enjoyment out of,” Whitmoyer said. I do take my business seriously but I’m not about to get uptight about anything.”Ĭlearly, making folks laugh makes his day. “I prefer relaxed jeans and a long-sleeved insulated shirt. But that doesn’t mean he prefers a business suit. He owns two business degrees, an associate’s from North Dakota State School of Science and a bachelor’s from Carroll College. “Now that rodeo’s picked up I’m focusing on that,” Whitmoyer said. Lyman also helped Whitmoyer by hiring him as a clown at several college rodeos. Shane Moran, a former star bronc rider, and University of Great Falls rodeo coach Dick Lyman are two of former bosses in the outfitting business. He has groomed trails at Great Divide Ski Area near Helena and has been a hunting guide. Whitmoyer is that rare college graduate who prefers blue-collar, outdoor work. “I love to do the bullfighting thing, too, bring the barrel in close and be there to help,” Whitmoyer said. Because there’s nothing funny about anyone getting hurt in the rodeo arena. I’ve accepted that, and because of that the job is very fulfilling.”įor sure, he’s not opposed to joining the bullfighters in protecting the cowboys. “I’m a clown,” he grinned the other night prior to a rodeo performance at the Pacific Steel and Recycling Four Seasons Arena. ![]()
